Sham Castle

by Amy

Sham Castle is a notable folly built around 1755 and makes for a lovely visit, taking in wonderful views of the city. So you’re not disappointed, it’s not actual a castle, it’s basically a screen wall commissioned by Ralph Allen (known for quarrying bath stone) to improve the view from his home in the city.

We parked for free on Cleveland Walk and took the steep path that cuts through to North Road and up through woodland to the castle. It’s very steep, especially for little legs, but we managed it with a lot of encouragement and a short carry. We took a blanket and had a picnic behind the folly to shelter from the wind. The whole trip probably only took us about 1.5 hrs.

There’s no charge to get in.

WALKS VIA SHAM CASTLE

Our trip only took about 1.5 hours which was enough with little ones. For something a bit longer here’s some walks that include Sham Castle –

Bath Sham Castle Circular – 5 miles, 2.5-3 hours, circular starts at Bath train station and takes in some famous city sights, up to the castle, then round through Bathwick wood and returns via the canal.

Bath Skyline Circular – 6 miles, 3.5-4 hours. Sham Castle is part of the iconic skyline walk.
