Alexandra Park & Playground, Bath

by Amy

This is the park with incredible, panoramic views across the city. It’s a tranquil green space with mature trees, a large bowls court and a playground specifically suitable for children of all abilities.

The Park. Alexandra Park was named in honour of Queen Alexandra and opened in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. It covers 11 acres and sits high up on top of Beechen Cliff on the southern hillside of Bath.

From central Bath you can reach the park via Shakespere Avenue in Bear Flats or via a steep climb. Head up Lyncombe Hill to Calton Road, then follow a long flight of steps known as Jacobs Ladder up to the park.

The Playground. The play area has recently had an upgrade to include play equipment that specifically allows children of all abilities to play together in one area. So as well as swings, climbing frames, rockers and a roundabout, the playground features:

  • A fast traditional roundabout, 2.4m diameter, with free standing space plus two wheelchair stations and a seat for toddlers.
  • A flush-fitted in ground trampoline that can be used by all, including wheelchair users.
  • A set of four swings that comprise a basket swing, a parent and baby swing, a flat swing and a wheelchair swing.

The Cafe. There isn’t a cafe in the park, however Choux Box van is in the park from 10am Fri-Sun and if you’re heading up from Bear Flats stop by.
