Canal, Sydney Gardens & The Holburne Museum, 5km Walk

by Amy

This 5km circular walk takes in some grand, historic parts of Bath. The canal has beautiful, far reaching countryside views, Sydney Gardens is an eighteenth century pleasure garden and The Holburne Museum is great for the latest exhibition or a lunch in the Garden Cafe. You also pass the elegant Great Pulteney Street, Pulteney Bridge and Walcot Street which are full of history, charm and lots of independent, artisan shops. If you start your walk from the centre of Bath you could make your halfway stop Larkhall and Alice Park which has a great playground.

This is my most frequent walk with my littlest in the buggy and Sydney Gardens my favourite of all Bath’s parks. It’s short, flat and paved, has plenty to entertain the kids and all the practical stuff like cafe and toilets.

THE WALK

  • I start from Larkhall, and often grab a pastry and coffee from the Larhall Deli or Goodies Delicatessen.
  • Turn right onto the London Road, cross then turn left down Grosvenor Bridge Road towards the canal, up the steps, or slope on the right past Undercliff Urban Farm .
  • At the top turn right and walk along the canal until you reach the white gates of Sydney Gardens – take your time promenading, check out the latest exhibition and check out all the fun stuff with the kids below.
  • The Holburne’s Garden Cafe make a perfect lunch or coffee stop on this walk
  • Head down the very grand Great Pulteney Street, over Pulteney Bridge, with a great view of the weir on the left and some fantastic cafes including the irresistible Nata & Co.
  • Then right up Walcot Street, also known as the Artisan Quarter with a selection of independent shops and traders, a Saturday market. Taylors Bagels is a great pit stop for coffee and a bagel.

FOR THE KIDS

  • Feed the ducks & swans on the canal
  • Hide and seek in the trees
  • Scoot or bike around the paths
  • Visit the Holburne Museum which has children’s activities
  • Construction & vehicle fans can get their fix with all the improvement works going on.
  • Visit the playground (closed for renovations until March 2022)
  • Stop on the bridge for some train spotting
  • Balance on the giant log
