Grimsbury Community Farm

by Amy

A wonderful, 20 acre, community farm about 20 minutes from Bath. It’s free to visit with plenty of animals, a lovely community run cafe and great playground.

I visited this farm a few years ago and I remember it for the many baby animals and lovely community cafe but it all felt a little tired. However, it seems to have undergone a bit of a transformation and has really improved. There’s even more animals to see in large fields and clearly marked paths around the site. Everything’s well sign posted and there’s more seating. The children loved watching the lambs being fed and we spent a long time watching a large tractor at work, then had our snacks sat in one of the new covered picnic tables which was fun.

The Animals. There’s plenty of animals to see here as you walk around the site. Cows basking in the field as you park your car, donkeys, pigs, sheep and pigmy goats. There’s rabbits, an aviary full of all sorts of birds including a beautiful golden pheasant, doves and hens. There’s a large duck pond with plenty of wildlife and some geese. Depending on the time of year you visit you’ll be able to see all the young too which the children love.

The Playground. We had great fun in the playground. It’s pretty big and there’s so much equipment. There was also a smaller cafe shop right inside the playground which is perfect to grab a drink and snack while they play. It’s all fenced in with gates so felt nice and safe too.

The Cafe. Barn Cafe is a non-profit enterprise and offers plenty of hot and cold lunch options as well as cakes and all the drinks. There’s also a lovely selection of ceramics and other locally made gifts available to buy in their shop section on the way in. The cafe supports people with learning disabilities and autism by offering them paid supported work and training opportunities.

The Picnic Area. A lovely feature of the farm is that there’s plenty of benches and picnic tables dotted around the site. There’s also a dedicated grassy picnic area dotted with tables and a bee nature trail to discover.
